The mojito is believed to have originated in Cuba, with its roots tracing back to the 16th century. The original version, known as “El Draque,” was a mix of aguardiente (a precursor to rum), lime, sugar, and mint, named after the English explorer Sir Francis Drake.
Famed American author Ernest Hemingway was a fan of the mojito. He frequented La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, where he reportedly enjoyed this cocktail and even signed the bar’s wall, making it a historic spot for mojito lovers.
Thanks to its refreshing qualities and cooling mint, the mojito is often considered the ultimate summer cocktail. It’s ideal for hot days and outdoor gatherings, offering a crisp and invigorating drink option.
Compared to many other mixed drinks, the mojito can be a lighter choice. It’s lower in calories than many sugary cocktails and provides a bit of vitamin C from the lime, making it a somewhat healthier indulgence.
