The cocktail is believed to have been created in the 1940s, with competing claims from two legendary bartenders: Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron, who allegedly invented the drink at his San Francisco bar, and Donn Beach, the owner of the first tiki bar in Hollywood.
A classic Mai Tai is made with rum (both light and dark), lime juice, orange liqueur, and a touch of orgeat syrup, which gives it a nutty sweetness. Some variations include pineapple juice or grenadine, adding complexity and color to the drink. Typically garnished with a cherry or a sprig of mint, the Mai Tai evokes images of palm trees, sun-kissed beaches, and laid-back island vibes.
The Mai Tai’s popularity skyrocketed during the tiki bar craze of the 1940s and ’50s, and it remains one of the most iconic cocktails associated with the tiki bar tradition. Its influence on the cocktail world continues to this day, inspiring variations in bars across the globe.
